Renewable Energy, Energy and Resource Efficiency Promotion
in International Cooperation

Dear members of the REPIC Network,

Water is vital for human populations, but it also plays an essential role in the production and availability of many other resources, particularly food and materials. With half the world’s population now exposed to water shortages and global consumption continuing to rise, competition will intensify in the future, exacerbated by the consequences of climate change. Against this backdrop, thoughtful and efficient use of water for each sector is crucial to ensure the renewal of the resource and long-term access to it. By extending our area of support to include water resources (previously restricted to wastewater), we are convinced that REPIC can, through your projects, make a substantial contribution to preserving this precious resource.

We look forward to discussing this with you at our annual event on 28 November 2024, and to finding out how other platforms are supporting international cooperation.

With best regards
Pierre Queloz
FOEN, member of the Steering Committee

REPIC Annual Event 2024, 20 years of successful projects

We are pleased to announce a special edition of our annual REPIC event to celebrate the platform’s 20th anniversary. On this occasion, we will look back on 20 years of experience and support for international and sustainable projects. We will welcome a number of support platforms, including the SECO Start-up Fund SSF, the Technology Fund and the KliK Foundation. Save the date, 28 November 2024 at the Eventforum, Bern.

Next deadlines for REPIC pilot and rollout projects 2024

30 September | 9 December
Detailed information about the application process is available here.

New projects

As part of this new REPIC Rollout project, the ETH Zurich spinoff is setting up a water filter production chain in the Medellín region. A digital platform is being used to pass on the knowledge required by local companies to assemble, sell and maintain the filters. By doing so, new jobs are being created and access to drinking water is being improved.

The consortium led by ASG International is developing and producing salt battery systems for photovoltaic installations in West Africa. This type of battery is particularly durable because it is non-flammable, recyclable and resistant to extreme conditions. The Rollout tests will enable the components to be adapted to arid environments.

Ongoing projects

Spaceafrica is developing a brick manufacturing and distribution process to recycle hemp crop waste. The first 100 bricks have been successfully pressed by hand, and the rest of the production process will be automated from summer 2024. A training centre will facilitate the transfer of knowledge to the local stakeholders.

To increase income from cocoa production, CABOZ adds value to the pulp of the cocoa tree fruit by transforming it into sweet juice. This raw material is particularly appreciated for the production of fine chocolates. An optimised logistics approach is being developed for the collection of raw materials. Finally, the factory and the water catchments will be supplied mainly by solar energy.

Projekte in der Abschlussphase

Seismic measurement stations were installed and commissioned in the vicinity of a large geothermal power station. The project partners implemented the new passive measurement method, analysed it and developed and optimised the necessary analysis models. 7 workshops and various specialist presentations and publications were held to promote the implementation and future use of the method developed.

The new passive / non-invasive approach to measurements is low-cost, CO2-neutral in operation and the sensors can be reused for future measurements.

The good results of the Sun Oxygen System (SOS) tests in Switzerland have been confirmed in Cambodia. Thirteen new ponds have been built and the SOS system has considerably reduced fish mortality. Fish production and workers’ incomes have increased, and the operating costs of the pond aerators have proved competitive with the diesel-powered system.

Of the ten women who initially took part in the fish farm manager training course, eight have now completed the second cycle and are financially independent.

The online training courses and the SOS system construction manual are available online.
